What exactly is a “calavera”?
In fact, you've probably seen these fun colorful skulls before.
Very common in Mexican culture, these skulls, which we also know under the name of calavera, form the symbol of the "day of the dead", a holiday aimed at celebrating those who have left us.
So, every year, thousands (perhaps even millions) of calaveras of all colors invade the streets, houses and cemeteries of Mexico. Thus, the dead are honored and the living remember them in memory.
For many, it is during the time of year surrounding All Souls' Day that the boundary between our earthly world and the afterlife is at its finest. Some even believe that the souls of the deceased then wander the Earth.
It is precisely for this reason that it is advisable to use calavera and, even more so, to wear one of these mosaic bracelets.
When they see one of these skulls, the dead are appeased, even amused for some. Please note, we are not saying that they are angry or necessarily represent a danger when they visit us, but simply that the Mexican skull has a special ability to soften them.
All this may seem very morbid to us but, in reality, it is nothing of the sort.
For centuries, the indigenous peoples of Mexico have considered the skull to be a great symbol of life. For them, only by being aware that even the dead can celebrate can we erase our concerns about their situation.
Moreover, the mosaic bracelets that you see here clearly show all of this...
With their bright and joyful colors that delight our eyes, there is even no doubt to be had!
