Concretely, what can such a “calavera” bring me?
The human skull is a symbol of death in most cultures around the world, and this is quite easily understood.
There is, however, a region of the world where this idea is not (not at all) shared: Mexico.
There, skulls are represented in all colors, sometimes even in the form of delicious pastries, and young and old alike have fun dressing up as skeletons.
When used in this way, the skulls are actually known as "calaveras" and, as you might expect, they are considered great good luck charms.
By honoring those who have passed away, and reminding us of Mexico's Aztec roots and celebrating life, Mexican skulls are a superb way to put death into perspective.
There are even certain legends according to which this type of motif would appease wandering souls on earth, to appease them and, ultimately, to help them find the right path to the afterlife.
More than just a fun tradition, decorating our home with such a flowered calavera would therefore be a real way to help certain souls in difficulty and, when we think about it carefully, to protect ourselves from their potential anger.
