What meaning can I give to the flag of Georgia?
Historically, Georgia was the result of the merger of several small independent kingdoms that existed in the Caucasus Mountains.
They all shared more or less the same language and the same culture. One of these common points is a little more surprising than the others: the colors of their lucky flag were also identical!
Apparently, the legendary Queen Tamar (1184 - 1213) used a war banner in white and cherry red colors.
The colors chosen by all the small states that made up the region were therefore inspired by them. Obviously, the same goes for the flag of Georgia.
Thus, all these standards remind us that sometimes, to preserve purity (represented by white), it is necessary to color the blood of one's enemies (red).
This is a strong message of territorial defense that Georgians have followed to the letter for several centuries...
As you might have guessed, it's not just its colors that make the Georgian flag interesting.
The symbol that we see, consisting of a large central cross surrounded by four smaller ones, which we see there corresponds to a Jerusalem cross.
It was Godefroid de Bouillon who was the first to use this type of cross on the flag of a country... and not just any country!
It was nothing more and nothing less than the Crusader State of Jerusalem, a symbol of Catholic resistance in an infidel land.
When we know that Georgia is a Christian enclave surrounded by Muslims to the North, South, East and West, we easily understand why the flag of Georgia is so dear to its inhabitants.
It indeed carries within itself a strong message of cultural, religious and physical resistance.
