The caduceus of Hermes, what is that for a lucky charm?
In Greek mythology, heralds and messengers usually carried a staff with them to lean on during their long journeys.
Hermes, son of Zeus, was a special messenger: he was that of the gods.
He therefore also carried a stick, which we know today under the name of "caduceus".
This particular object usually comes with a pair of wings and two snakes coiled around it. The heads of the snakes meet to face each other just below the wings.
This caduceus necklace therefore represents Hermes, as well as all the trades and activities associated with him.
Among these, we can notably count commerce, travel, eloquence and the arts...
Not bad for just one god!
As for the use of the caduceus of Hermes as a symbol for the medical field, there is controversy.
Although you have probably seen it in your doctor's office, the true symbol of medicine is not this one, but another symbol known as the "Staff of Asclepius", Asclepius being the Greek god of healing and medicine.
Rather similar to the caduceus of Hermes in its appearance, confusion was made between these two Greek lucky charms around the middle of the 19th century.
In any case, today there are thousands of doctors who wear a Hermes caduceus necklace.
Some do it out of simple tradition. Others, admittedly rarer, see it as a lucky charm for protection, an assurance that their actions will be good and that their patients will be well treated.
However, we have made it clear: even if it is true that the caduceus has real powers and can help us in the areas to which it is linked, there is no particular reason for it to help a doctor more than anyone else!
