So, what’s so special about the lucky iron?
While many people “touch wood” to attract luck and ensure happy days, did you know that the Italians “touch iron” ?
Historians tell us that the tradition of touching wood comes from a pagan belief that trees are inhabited by spirits and deities. By hitting them, you would in some way invoke their blessing.
Well, we can believe it or not, but at least this explanation holds up. But then, why do Italians touch lucky iron?
The Italian expression for this practice is “toccare ferro”. It is in fact the abbreviation of "toccare ferro di cavallo" which literally means "to touch the horse's shoe", an allusion to the mounts of knights and soldiers.
Thus, touching this “lucky iron” would amount to ensuring the same protection as that necessarily possessed by warriors returning safely from battle.
In short, this custom gave Italy the tradition of hanging a horseshoe above the doors of houses in order to keep witches and demons away. And yes, the horseshoe is also an Italian lucky charm!
Along the same lines, many people constantly carry a small piece of this metal with them. Nail, ore stone (as is the case here) or small ingot: whatever its shape, touching iron will give you the same powers.
