The Gye Nyame? What is the meaning of this African symbol?
The Gye Nyame symbol is one of the most popular among what we call Adinkra. This term refers to the different shapes and patterns used by the inhabitants of Ghana (and more broadly of West Africa in general) to represent their gods and beliefs.
More particularly, the Gye Nyame expresses their deep faith in an omnipresent God whom they call Nyame, but sometimes also Onyame or Onyakopon (to name just a few of his names).
In fact, “Gye Nyame” is a term from the Twi language and which translates into French as “Except God”. There are, if we believe the wise and ancient, several ways of understanding the meaning of this African lucky charm.
For example, it can symbolize the omnipotence of God, and the idea that we should fear nothing other than disappointing him. As the ruler of all things and beings, revering Him and living according to His teachings are enough to protect us from all evils.
Another interpretation could be that at the time of creation, nothing existed except God. This pendant bearing the Gye Nyame would therefore be a reminder of who is the creative being at the origin of everything.
