So, what is the meaning of the falcon in Japanese culture?
Let us first point out that, in the Japanese language, the word "taka" refers to both hawks and eagles. Indeed, apart from the curvature of their beaks, these two species of birds are very similar.
As in many cultures, the Japanese taka is seen as a proud and fierce animal, with a very determined piercing gaze. This could explain why it has long been a symbol of the samurai.
In Japanese art, this bird of prey is often represented alongside snakes. While these venomous animals represent a real danger to humans, the Japanese falcon makes short work of them. By swooping down on them like lightning, it can grab them in its sharp claws...
This must be seen as an allegory of combat and war. At the heart of battle is kill or be killed, and even the most terrible adversary for you can fall prey to another. The meaning of this taka kite is therefore certainly very deep.
