In fact, “Akofena” is an African language word that can be translated into French as “war sword”. We can easily understand from this that this symbol is associated with fighters.
Originating in Ghana and the Ivory Coast, crossed swords of this kind were a popular motif in the creation of standards and emblems carried by powerful African chiefs.
The Akan states (a region wedged between the Comoé and Volta rivers) have long used Akofena at the highest levels of power themselves. As a symbol of state authority, it was associated with prestige and power.
According to some, this powerful symbol helped states survive by instilling strength and courage in the hearts of the warriors who defended their land.
