A Jewish religious symbol? What is the story of the menorah, this 7-branched candlestick?
The menorah is an object used in many religious rituals in Judaism. This 7-branched candlestick actually symbolizes old and new Israel.
It is in the Book of Exodus that the menorah is first mentioned. The shape of the 7-branched candlestick was revealed to Moses by God at the top of Mount Sinai.
According to the Book of Kings, the entrance to Solomon's temple was decorated with 10 golden menorahs. After returning from their exile in Babylon, the Jews undertook the construction of a second temple in which they again placed a sacred 7-branched candlestick.
Under Roman occupation, the temple was desecrated. ..and the menorah was carried far from the land of Israel.
Since then, the 7-branched candlestick and an emblematic Jewish lucky charm, a true rallying sign for an entire people.
You should know that, according to the Talmud, the reconstruction of the menorah will only be authorized once the temple is rebuilt. The Jewish candlesticks that we can see today are therefore only imitations, a sort of homage... but which in no way claim to be the original menorah!
