You should know that, under the Roman Empire, the first followers of Christ were persecuted and killed for their faith. In such a context, Christians had to hide and find ways to avoid displaying their convictions.
While the cross was too recognizable, and therefore could not be used, the anchor was chosen as a sign of recognition of these early martyrs.
Since then, this strong Christian symbol has been associated with courage in the face of persecution and hope for a better tomorrow.
