Its popularity has spread throughout the world. Today, this French lucky charm is known by different names, depending on where it is found, but all credit France with having created it.
In Spain, for example, it is called the Cruz de Lorena. It is known in Hungary as the Szent István Kereszt (St. Stephen's Cross).
Historically, it was the Dukes of Lorraine who were the first to use this symbol on their standard.
Much later, during the Second World War, the Cross of Lorraine became the symbol of Free France. Indeed, General de Gaulle (then on the run in England) decided to make it the rallying sign of the resistance.
