The gwenn ha du... what is the place of this Breton lucky charm?
The Breton regional flag of "gwenn ha du" is made up of 9 horizontal bands, five black and four white, as well as 11 ermine symbols. Concretely, these nine bands represent the traditional division of Brittany into dioceses.
Blacks are associated with places where the French language is historically spoken: Dol, Nantes, Rennes, Saint-Malo and Saint-Brieuc.
The white ones evoke the Breton-speaking area: Trégor, Léon, Cornouaille and Vannes.
The regional flag of the Breton “gwenn ha du” therefore represents Brittany in its entirety.
The ermine is a lucky charm that we can often find on coats of arms. (These are these little symbols that look like an upside-down tuft of grass with three dots above it.)
