Why is the Spanish flag so important?
A country's flag often represents its deep identity.
You must be aware: the Spanish flag is no exception to this rule and therefore offers us a good overview of what made this nation.
To better understand what we are talking about, let's first look at its colors.
If red and yellow were chosen, it is quite simply because of their very representative nature of a centuries-old tradition of the Iberian Peninsula.
Bullfighting (better known as corrida) is a folk custom that sees a bull and a man compete against each other.
While the yellow of the Spanish national flag represents the sand of the arena, the red is associated with the blood shed by the animal during this terrible fight.
Aside from its colors, you cannot have missed the symbol on the standard.
In fact, here we can see the coats of arms of the four founding kingdoms of current Spain (Aragon, Castile, Leon and Navarre) put together, united in a great movement of national unity.
At the top of these four coats of arms is the symbol of the House of Bourbons, the royal family of Spain.
On either side of this coat of arms are two columns. These are in reality the famous “pillars of Hercules”, representing the Strait of Gibraltar, and therefore the historical link between Spain and the Muslim world.
These columns are also decorated with banners on which are the words “PLUS ULTRA”. Translating as “further beyond”, this expression refers to the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus.
It’s clear: the Spanish flag is rich in symbolism and hidden messages!
Seeing it fly with its warm and reassuring colors, hearing it flapping in the salty sea wind... This is what we wish it for centuries to come.
