But concretely, what messages does this famous franc convey?
This reproduction of an old French coin from 1909 has two sides, and therefore two symbols: on the one hand we have the Marianne, and on the other hand the Gallic rooster.
Marianne is undoubtedly the best-known lucky symbol of Republican France.
In fact, we refer to these busts of women with proud eyes and wearing the Phrygian cap (an ancient emblem linked to freedom and emancipation) as “Marianne”.
Marianne thus wonderfully symbolizes the cardinal values of the Revolution and the Republic: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.
The other major element of this lucky coin is of course the rooster.
You should know that the association between the French (then known as the Gauls) and this animal actually dates back to Antiquity.
The Romans actually made fun of the inhabitants of Gaul at the time by the resemblance of the Latin term used to designate roosters, "gallus", that used to speak of the land beyond the Alps, "Gallia".
The Gauls were also known for their bad temper… a bit like the rooster!
This is how, over time, the French were able to adopt the rooster as an emblem of their people, but also of the values of courage and bravery that are so dear to them.
