Who is Saint George actually? And what is its story?
Saint George killing the dragon is one of the most famous legends in the Christian world.
Most of us will have heard of his exploits, whether in Sunday school or as a bedtime story.
The symbolism behind this story, however, is much deeper than it seems.
You should know that in the Middle Ages, the dragon was commonly used to represent the devil. Saint John, in his book of Revelation, describes how the evil one took the form of a terrible dragon.
More than that of a simple fight, the story of Saint George is also that of a conversion and a martyr.
Indeed, the great hero is presented to us as an outstanding fighter who converts to Christianity despite the general opinion of his time. (This can also make us think of our current society, don’t you think?)
Later, although he freed the region from the dragon that terrorized it, the local powers had him executed for having preserved his faith despite the obligation that had been given to him to abandon it.
By absolute loyalty to Christ or by his legendary fight, Saint George is indeed a great hero.
