What exactly are matryoshka dolls?
Matryoshka dolls form a set of seven small wooden statues of decreasing sizes which fit into each other.
Each doll is divided into two parts to be able to open, and thus reveal the next one hidden inside.
Ever since matryoshka dolls came into existence, they have always depicted women.
A Russian lucky charm associated with fertility, and more particularly motherhood, the dolls' big belly depicts the robust silhouette of a Russian mother.
In fact, each doll smaller than the previous one can be seen as the daughter of the previous one.
We thus see the importance of the traditional family : everyone protects all their descendants.
Mothers indeed play a central role in the Russian family. Being able to carry life and multiply it is a tremendous power.
In some regions of Russia, having a large family is the norm. There are generally more than three children per couple, and the extended family (cousins, etc.) live under the same roof.
Very often, it is on the shoulders of the mother that this entire construction rests.
