How can a Spanish escudo be a good luck charm?

In fact, no coin is more associated with the thirst for glory and conquest than the Spanish escudo.

This type of gold coin was minted from 1536 until 1833.

Over time, its value steadily declined, with inflation from the colonies creating a steady devaluation of currency throughout Europe.

Regardless, owning a Spanish escudo has always been a source of personal glory.

Largely melted using colonial gold, this lucky coin has a heavy history behind it.

Many of the galleons that sank were filled with them. A legend gradually formed around this phenomenon...

If you managed to fish out a Spanish escudo from the bottom of the sea, fortune would smile on you and your family for eternity!

Many men are tried.

Many gave up and some even lost their lives.

However, there is a story more disturbing than the others...

A privateer named Cornelis Ward one day decided to try his luck too.

When he returned to the port, he took out of his pocket what appeared to be nothing more than an old rusty coin that any ragpicker could have picked up.

He claimed that it was a real Spanish lucky coin.

The crowd called him a liar.

The future decided and proved Captain Ward right : his career as a pirate had a success that could not be put down to chance.

Quite disturbing, don't you think?

Symbol of an empire which was the most powerful of its time, the Spanish escudo of 1699 is a lucky coin so could well have a real effect, but also a lot of blood on the hands...
