But actually, who is Saint Christopher?
Saint Christopher is one of the most popular Christian Saints in the world.
The message his legend carries is more relevant than ever in our modern society !
We are in fact told the story of a man of impressive size and great physical vigor, but whose spirituality was in decline. This man, moreover, didn't really know what to choose between a pious life and a life of pleasure. (Many can no doubt recognize themselves in this.)
One day, a child approached the man at the edge of a river and asked him to help him cross it. Without much hesitation, he accepted and took the little one on his shoulder.
As the crossing progressed, the child's weight grew heavier and heavier, until it seemed to weigh tons. Despite the difficulty, the man arrived on the other side and dropped off his passenger.
Curious, he asks him how a kid of such size could weigh so heavy.
The child then revealed himself to be Jesus, and the weight he felt was neither more nor less than the weight of the world that Christ carries on his shoulders every day.
The man then immediately converted and was from then on known as Saint Christopher (Christ-of = Christ-bearer).
Given this legend, it is not surprising that Saint Christopher is the patron saint of travelers and transporters of all kinds.
Many people choose to wear a Saint Christopher medal during their travels in order to receive additional protection.
Some Catholics also believe that he will bless them and protect them from storms and other trials they may encounter (from a physical but also spiritual point of view).
More pragmatically, Saint Christopher medals are often hung on car mirrors to protect against road accidents.
