What is the meaning of the Trinacria?

Roughly speaking, the Trinacria is composed of a woman's head enthroned in the middle of the three legs.

Official symbol of Sicily, it was adopted for the first time during the Sicilian Vespers of the revolts which took place in 1282 against the French occupiers.

A large island separated from the continent by the Mediterranean, Sicily was known to the Romans as "Trinacrium". (Here we see a direct link with the Italian lucky charm that interests us.)

In fact, this name referred to the shape of the island, delimited by three capes: Lilibeo, Peloro and Passero.

Additionally, in ancient customs, the three legs could suggest a rotational movement. This has been linked by historians to an ancient Eastern religion practiced by the Scythians. Yes, European cultures are sometimes strangely intertwined...

In short, when we analyze the Trinacria, we can also note the presence of the Medusa.

A Greek mythological creature, this snake-headed woman was known for her ability to turn any man who looked at her into stone. Despite this negative aspect, certain myths nevertheless present her as a beneficial ally who fights the forces of evil alongside men.

From the head of this creature come three ears of wheat. Here, the meaning is easy to understand: they are the symbol of the fertility and wealth of the land of Sicily. Isn't it said of the island that it was the granary of Rome?

Tradition, protection, prosperity... This amulet bearing the Trinacria is definitely an Italian lucky charm that offers great things!
