Why do the Chinese like General Guan Yu so much?

The answer is simple : through the audacity and strength he demonstrated, Guan Yu played the role of a major leader in the bloody conflicts that caused the fall of the Han Empire... and to such an extent that many Chinese Taoists today consider him a god.

Guan Yu was born in the year 162 in the Chinese province of Shanxi. He married and had a son named Guan Ping. (We cite him because the general fought and died alongside him. His son therefore occupies an essential place in many stories.)

The era in which General Guan Yu lived had already seen a major event occur for several years: the collapse of the Han empire. The various Chinese chiefs and leaders then fiercely competed for the title of emperor.

After a few years of confrontation, two large camps appeared to everyone as the main contenders: on one side we had a leader named Cao Cao and, on the other, a certain Liu Bei.

History teaches us that Guan Yu took up Cao Cao's cause. Under his command, he demonstrated an unparalleled leadership capacity and allowed his side to win several decisive battles.

His simply heroic exploits were notably recounted in a century-old book called “The Three Kingdoms”. For some, part of the legend surrounding the general is attributable to this work.

Whatever the case, the fact is that from year to year, his reputation only grew to the point that China today still has thousands of altars (mainly in the South of the country) dedicated to him. who many describe as a deity.

According to some, this is just folklore. For others, this type of statue of General Guan Yu contains real power.

It's up to everyone to have their own opinion on the matter...
