The double-headed royal eagle... where does this symbol come from?

The golden double-headed eagle is one of the Russian lucky charms most closely linked to the Motherland.

It was during the 15th century that Ivan III made it the official symbol of the Russian monarchy. It was therefore the emblem of the Imperial Court of the Tsars, until the fall of royalty in 1917.

In reality, the double-headed royal eagle is a reference to the country's origins and traditional values.

Some say that this animal represents the link of descent between Russia and the Eastern Roman Empire.

Others claim that the tsars adapted the symbol of the Holy Roman Empire into a symbol of Orthodox Christianity.

So much for its origin. Now let's look at its meaning.

It is generally accepted that with its heads turned towards the West and the East respectively, the royal double-headed eagle represents the geographical position of Russia, between East and West... but not only that.

Often this Russian lucky charm is associated with absolute monarchy, a form of government in which the king and queen are above all and have all power.

Moreover, the symbols of Russian royalty (namely the scepter and the orb) are often placed in the claws of the animal.

You will have understood: this chapka with the royal double-headed eagle is associated with a period of glory and greatness for Holy Russia.
