Why should I care about this flag actually?

The flag used to represent a people always has something special.

That of the Sicilians reflects their great pride, their unique history and the incessant fight which takes place on this Mediterranean island.

The origin of the Sicilian regional flag dates back to 1282, the date of a founding event of Sicily known as the "Sicilian Vespers".

It is in fact the rebellion of the local populations against the Angevins, invaders from France.

At the time, Sicilians did not have a flag. However, to be able to unite and march together against the enemy, they needed one!

They then decided to collect the symbols which, in their opinion, best described their native island.

Thus, while the yellow of the standard represents the wheat of Sicily, the red symbolizes the blood shed by the Sicilians during this terrible revolution.

The three legs, rotating together in the same movement, represent the three capes of Sicily: Peloro (near Messina, in the northeast), Passero (Siracusa, in the south) and Lilibeo (Marsala, in the west). ).

You should know that Spartan warriors used to draw a white bent leg on their shields as a magical symbol of strength. This leaves us wondering about the temperament of the Sicilians…

The head of Medusa serves to protect the island. This image was in fact associated throughout Antiquity with protection against evil, spirits and demons.

When we know that the Sicilian flag has endured since its creation, just like the island and its inhabitants, we can once again be thoughtful...

In any case, one thing is certain: Sicilians are very proud of their country and their culture... and they are right!
