Where could the Wu Lou gourd come from?

The Wu Lou gourd has an ancient and mysterious history.

We are talking here about a potentially thousand-year-old Chinese lucky charm. What we are going to say here are therefore only rumors, transmitted orally for generations.

It was the Buddhist monks of the Huaiyu Mountains who first popularized them.

In certain valleys, water could be scarce. The walkers then hung nuts on the end of their sticks which, once emptied, could be used to store water. The Wu Lou gourd would therefore have been born like that.

Despite this caution, some travelers still died of thirst.

The monks then decided to take the situation in hand. They set up collective blessing ceremonies for Wu Lou gourds.

Since that day, no more pilgrims have been found dehydrated around the monastery...

This type of legend is interesting and teaches us a lot but, above all, it is not limited to Chinese culture. We can actually find comparable traditions all over the world.

For example, there is a similar gourd associated with the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela or in the cultures of nomads and camel drivers of the Sahara.

Whether your journey is physical (walking, pilgrimages, etc.) or spiritual, there is no doubt that being accompanied by such a lucky charm can prove useful, even necessary, it is in any case an opinion that share very different cultures.

In short, be curious and go check out the effects that the Wu Lou bottle will have on your life.
