Definition of Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of massage of Japanese origin which tends to restore the body's energy balance. It is inspired by the fundamental principles of traditional Chinese medicine, notably those of meridians and acupuncture points. The term “Shiatsu” literally means “finger pressure”.

This therapeutic practice is based on the concept that the body has a complex system made up of channels called meridians, through which Qi (Vital Energy) circulates. When this circulation is disrupted, it can cause various physical or psychological disorders.

Shiatsu therefore consists of applying manual pressure to points located on these same meridians in order to stimulate the circulation of Qi and thus allow the patient to regain good physical and mental balance. This ancestral technique not only soothes muscle and joint pain, but it also helps relieve certain stress-related symptoms such as anxiety and depression.

The main principles of Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a holistic practice aimed at restoring balance and well-being to each individual. It is a comprehensive approach that combines massage, stretching and mobilization techniques to stimulate energy circulation.

Practitioners use their hands to apply different pressures throughout the body to improve blood and lymphatic circulation, reduce muscle tension and relieve joint pain.

This ancestral technique offers a wide range of physical, psychological and spiritual benefits that can help improve your overall quality of life. In particular, it increases your ability to relax, increases your level of physical and mental endurance, thus promoting deeper sleep.

History of Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of manual therapy that dates back more than 5,000 years, when traditional Chinese medicine evolved into Sei-barrel (massage) and then shiatsu do. In the 1950s, Tokujiro Namikoshi popularized this practice, making it known in Japan and around the world.

Since then, Shiatsu has spread to various countries and is recognized for its therapeutic benefits. It can be used as an effective tool to relieve chronic muscle or joint pain, stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation or soothe nervous and mental tensions accumulated by daily stress.

More and more people are relying on the benefits of Shiatsu because it offers a natural solution to various physical or psychological problems without resorting to the potentially harmful side effects of chemical medications. Consequently, its importance continues to increase all around the globe!

How does a Shiatsu session work?

Shiatsu is an energetic massage technique which aims to restore balance and the harmonious circulation of vital energy in the body. A session begins with an interview with the practitioner to assess the patient's specific needs. Then, he is invited to lie down on a futon or a table designed for this type of massage.

The practitioner then uses his hands (sometimes also his elbows or knees) to exert more or less intense pressure on different specific points of the body depending on your specific needs. Each session lasts approximately 60 minutes during which you can feel various sensations such as diffuse heat or tingling when the energy circulates freely. It is recommended after each session to drink plenty of water to help flush out the toxins released during the shiatsu massage.

This complete therapy offers several benefits for our physical and mental well-being: it promotes relaxation, strengthens the immune system and relieves certain disorders such as chronic muscle pain, digestive problems or even occasional insomnia.
