So, what is this famous “tea ceremony”?
In Japan, making tea is something much deeper than just boiling water. It is actually a very important ritual that has deep meaning in the culture.
In fact, the tea ceremony represents purity, tranquility, respect and harmony. We therefore understand why so much preparation is necessary for its realization.
The tradition of the Japanese tea ceremony is intrinsically linked to Zen Buddhism. It actually dates back to the 9th century, when a Buddhist monk imported tea to Japan. You should know that before, this drink was only drunk by the Chinese people.
After tasting it, the emperor of the time fell in love with it and tea became an important social marker in Japan. Due to the precious ceramics that its preparation required, only the wealthiest classes could drink it.
Recognized for its medicinal virtues but also its spiritual properties, the Zen tradition in Japan gave pride of place to this drink which it considered effective in “relieving our emotions of all negativity”.
Two of the most important ideas behind the Japanese tea ceremony are the concepts of "Wabi" and "Sabi".
“Wabi” represents the ability to approach the spiritual experiences of human life with calm, refinement and sobriety.
“Sabi” represents the material side of life and more particularly its immanent incompleteness. Understanding this imperfection is considered an important step towards spiritual awakening.
