The sea turtle, why is it a symbol of Hawaii in fact?
In fact, the sea turtle is the only reptile that scientists have only been able to find on this island. This animal is truly unique to Hawaii.
According to cultures, the Hawaiian turtle, also called Honu, is actually a representation of an older guardian spirit named Amakua.
F or the Polynesian people of yesterday and today, the Honu represents navigation, as well as the eternal link between man and the sea. Modern or ancient, representations of the turtle are everywhere on the island of 'Hawaii.
There is a legend that tells us of a giant Honu, who transforms from time to time into a woman to be able to serve as protector to the Keiki (children) playing along the shores.
Since being placed on the endangered species list, the Hawaiian tortoise population has rebounded significantly. This is a good thing because some specimens were truly endangered.
Today, the fishing has almost stopped... and fortunately!
