When does the symbol on this “calavera” skull ring date from?

This actually goes back a very long time.  at a time when the skull was a predominant figure in Mesoamerican societies and cultures.

Whether displaying the skulls of prisoners of war or human sacrifices, these civilizations used this type of lucky charm to impress and frighten their enemies... but not only that.

These civilizations believed in a spiritual life after death, so using the “calavera” skull as a good luck charm was a symbolic way of overcoming fear of the afterlife.

With the arrival of the Spanish conquerors and their religion, many traditions evolved. This “calavera” skull ring is a good example of this phenomenon.

As the people gradually abandoned their archaic practices, the meaning of Mexican symbols necessarily evolved. Human sacrifices or skulls of opponents have therefore given way to colorful and fun sculptures as well as delicious biscuits.

If one day you have the chance to visit Mexico, you will indeed be able to see thousands of these little lucky charms , each more stylized than the other, almost everywhere in the streets of towns and villages.
