Before gaining independence in the 19th century, Greece was under Ottoman rule.
The desire for religious freedom and cultural development led to a national revolt and the proclamation of Greek independence in the 1820s. In this context, many different revolutionary flags arose.
Blue and white were ultimately chosen as the color, in allusion to devotion to the Greek Orthodox faith.
The flag of Greece, with its white cross and colored stripes, actually symbolizes the "wisdom of God and the freedom of the homeland".
For some, the 9 bands of this flag are associated with the 9 syllables of the Greek state motto: “ Elefthería í thánatos ”. This translates into French as "Freedom or Death"...
