What is Gye Nyame actually?
The Gye Nyame is probably the most iconic symbol of West Africa or, at least, of the Ghana region.
Literally translating as “except for God”, its meaning is quite simple to understand: Gye Nyame expresses the omniscience and omnipotence of God.
Yes, the idea of a superior creative Being is older than we might think in Africa!
In short, this symbol originally served as an emblem for the Gyaman people who inhabited what is now Ivory Coast.
