What does the symbol engraved in the middle of this pendant mean?
This meaning is deep, really.
Sicily is a captivating region, with a unique culture and mysterious legends. All those who come from this island can pride themselves on belonging to a very beautiful homeland.
The emblem chosen by the Sicilians is the Trinacria. Made up of a Medusa head from which three legs and three ears of wheat extend in a rotating movement, this symbol has a strong symbolism.
In reality, Trinacria was adopted centuries ago during a Sicilian revolt. It then served the fierce inhabitants of the island as a unifying symbol.
The people rising up against oppression indeed needed a standard under which to unite...
When we analyze its meaning, we must admit that this Italian lucky charm has close links with the Ancient Greeks. It was in fact they who dominated Sicily during the first centuries of its history.
It is therefore from them that the head of Medusa present on Trinacria comes, a monstrous creature which seduced men with its charms before transforming them into stone.
At the time, it was customary to place a representation of Medusa at the entrance to a house to protect it. The tradition would then have extended to the flag, thus protecting the entire country...
Interesting !
The legs would show us the three capes which delimit Sicily, a triangular island: Peloro, Passero and Lilibeo.
The ears of wheat, for their part, allude to the rich and fertile soil, a source of abundant food.
Thus, by being decorated with such a symbol, this Sicilian regionalist pendant lives up to its name!
Ancient culture, rich traditions, living soil: it presents some of the most remarkable qualities of Sicily and its people.
