Joss paper, what is it used for exactly?
The Vietnamese are deeply attached to their ancient lunar calendar.
Even though most citizens today use the Gregorian calendar in everyday life, many holidays and festivals are still punctuated by their ancient Buddhist almanac.
In this context, the month of July occupies a special place. He actually sees the famous ghost festival take place, a very important event from local Buddhism.
According to tradition, the souls of the deceased come to earth once a year to check that their loved ones are still thinking of them. If a ghost is left without an offering and a thought for him, he can become mad with anger and cause great misfortune.
To avoid this, each family must prepare some offerings, including the joss paper from the ghost festival.
Typically, it is burned with incense and a few other Vietnamese good luck charms during a grand celebration held in honor of all those who have departed.
This event is also an opportunity to forgive the dead for the faults and sins they had committed while alive. With this in mind, collective prayer sessions are therefore organized in many Vietnamese Buddhist temples.
If you think it might be wise to take an interest in this kind of custom, some Ghost Festival joss paper will come in handy.
If not, too bad for you.
