The icon of Saint Nicholas, how is it a Russian lucky charm?
Known to be the patron and protector of children, Saint Nicholas is a historical figure who served as bishop of the city of Myra (a city in present-day Turkey).
Appearing during the 12th century, icons were a means of representing Christian characters (most often saints) in order to pay homage to them. Specialists on the subject also believe that Saint Nicholas is the first man of the Church to have appeared on icons.
Particularly appreciated in Orthodox Christianity, the icon of Saint Nicholas therefore occupies a special place, in particular as a Russian good luck charm...
Indeed, the cult of this saint quickly spread in Russia thanks to the trade routes which linked the motherland to the rest of the continent, until he officially became the patron of Russia.
Often represented in paintings or sculpture, this type of icon of Saint Nicholas is therefore very appreciated by the Russian people.
Historically, this character was also considered the savior of Russia from the nomadic hordes (notably the Tartars).
In fact, the presence or absence of images of Saint Nicholas in the forests and steppes often demarcated the borders of the territory. So, after these icons was the land of barbarians and savages for whom the word "Christendom" meant nothing.
More than a way to pay homage to a saint with an exemplary life, this icon of Saint Nicholas is therefore a way of showing your attachment to the history of Russia, as well as its struggle to survive against the nomads of the 'East.
