But actually, what is an oni?

Onis are monstrous creatures found in many Japanese tales. Often described as cunning and pranksters, they are enemies of humans for whom they like to set traps.

The Japanese word "oni" actually comes from a Chinese character meaning "ghost." In medieval Japan, before the various Japanese spirits were as well classified as they are today, the word oni could refer to just about any supernatural creature.

Today, oni is used to describe frightening demons with horns and evil smiles, always ready to feast on human flesh. All of these beings also possess exceptional strength and some of them are sorcerers.

In fact, these demons are the result of damned souls who cannot find redemption. Specifically, when a truly evil man dies, he can find himself transformed into an oni in one of the many Buddhist hells. He must then serve Lord Enma, ruler of Hell, by torturing other damned souls and even certain minor demons.

Sometimes, when a human is so evil that their very soul is denied by Enma, they transform into an oni on Earth, terrorizing the living. It is precisely them that tales and legends speak of.

A completely legitimate question may then come to mind...

How can such a demonic figure serve as a good luck charm?

The answer is simple : by its simple appearance, an oni even scares away evil spirits who might want to come and torment you.

So, wearing this Japanese lucky necklace is a good way to protect yourself from a whole host of evils.
