The cross of Jerusalem? What's special about this lucky charm?
In fact, it is a major symbol used throughout Christianity.
It represents the command given to us by Christ to spread the Gospel throughout the world starting from Jerusalem.
Many crusaders who went to fight in the holy land wore this type of amulet with a Jerusalem cross.
This Christian lucky charm was also found on many banners, notably that of Pope Urban II.
Imagine flags of all colors all carrying the same cross and flying in the heart of the battle... The spectacle must have been impressive.
Later, the famous Godefroid de Bouillon made the Jerusalem cross his personal coat of arms. We are talking here about one of the greatest warriors of all time, who was rewarded by being named the first ruler of Jerusalem.
The Jerusalem Cross is essentially made up of five smaller crosses: a large one in the center and 4 others for each quadrant.
Several interpretations exist for this Christian lucky charm, but we will now reveal the two main ones.
It could be that the central cross represents Christ and that the small ones symbolize the four evangelists: John, Luke, Mark and Matthew.
Another way of seeing this symbol is to consider the largest cross as being the wound made in Christ's side during his crucifixion, the others would then represent his stigmata on his hands and feet.
In some sense, the Jerusalem cross can be seen as a reminder of the suffering that Jesus Christ endured to save us.
Whatever the case, one thing is certain: this amulet with a Jerusalem cross is indeed a Christian symbol.
