The crow ? A Viking symbol?
In the year 875, the raven made the whole of England tremble.
The famous Viking leader Ragnar Lodbrok made it his banner, and began raiding and pillaging monasteries across the country.
This standard, known as hrafnsmerki, entered into the lasting imagination of the people who had to undergo these invasions. A true battle totem, the Viking raven spread terror among enemies and symbolized glory and victory for the men of the North.
Imagine the terror in the hearts of the men who saw the raiders from the north coming towards them... It must have been nothing short of gripping.
Since the beginning of their civilization, the Vikings have actually given an important place to this animal. The raven is, for example , Odin's sacred animal.
In mythology, the god is often represented alongside two ravens, Huginn and Muninn. They are the eyes of Odin who, taking off every morning to fly over the world of men, inform him of everything that is happening. It's not for nothing that Odin is sometimes called "the god of ravens"!
By choosing the hrafnsmerki as their banner, the Vikings perhaps aimed to attract the favor of their powerful warrior divinity. Whatever the case, the raven is certainly a very important sacred animal for the Vikings, synonymous with power and severity.
These ancient warriors therefore represented it absolutely everywhere: armor, helmets, axes, swords... and lucky amulets.
This type of talisman was therefore undoubtedly also used to invoke the powers of Odin. Whether it actually works or not, the fact is that the Vikings experienced a disturbing rise in power throughout their history, don't you think?
