This tradition comes straight from West Africa, the region where slaves often came from.
The African animist tradition used small figurines, a kind of fetish, called bocia during its rituals.
Despite popular belief, the use of this type of small voodoo doll is clearly not intended to do evil.
A common way to use this lucky charm is to hang it on cemetery trees. The voodoo doll is then supposed to open “lines of communication” with recently deceased people.
Most of the time, however, the Haitian voodoo doll will be used for healing and healing.
The idea that this voodoo good luck charm is intended to do evil actually dates back to Hollywood horror films of the 1950s.
