So who is La Catrina?

La Catrina is arguably one of the most powerful symbols of Day of the Dead celebrations, and indeed of Mexico in general.

With her bare skull and mysterious smile, La Catrina is disturbing : how could something associated with death also be linked to joy?

In reality, this reflects the peaceful vision that the Mexican people have regarding death.

For them, we must maintain our joy of living at all costs even in the face of an inevitably tragic end; death is a kind of passage which is not frightening and with which we must learn to live.

This very particular conception would in all likelihood come from the ancient Aztecs who, on the territory of Mexico a century ago, devoted a kind of cult to human skulls and more broadly to death.

The use of the skull (and therefore of the Catrina from which this ring is made) as a Mexican lucky charm would therefore come from there… Interesting!

In any case, the character of Catrina as a skeletal but nevertheless sympathetic young woman dates from the end of the 19th century.

During this period, an artist named Jose Guadalupe Posada created it to animate the comics section of the country's first newspaper.

A century later, La Catrina will have been the source of a true cultural revolution, without ever having lost its primary meaning: that of a unique attitude of openness and good humor even in the face of the heaviest trials of life..

In this sense, this La Catrina ring undoubtedly has a lot to teach us.
