How exactly did the piggy bank become what we know it today?

As you can imagine, the first piggy banks were not shaped like pigs.

The oldest found to date comes from Greece, and is dated to the second century BC.

The first piggy banks consisted of small balls made of ceramic or terracotta, with a slot to slide the coins into.

According to some historians, the piggy bank comes to us from Middle Ages England.

The people there had gotten into the habit of keeping their savings in jars made from a local clay called "pygg".

The term "pyggy bank" (= bank in pygg) has gradually entered common language.

One day, a craftsman had the idea of giving the shape of a pig to one of these jars. (in English, pig is “pig”).

The play on words had its small success : the “piggy bank” was born. You will have understood, this term literally means “pig piggy bank”.

In many families, this custom is very important, and each child has their own piggy bank.

You can also ask your elders: they too have undoubtedly known the piggy bank. They deposited their savings there to ultimately break it into a thousand pieces, and free the treasure.

Family tradition or simple curiosity, offering a piggy bank is always a good way to teach your child to save.
