But in fact, what makes white sage so special?
White sage, Salvia officinalis by its scientific name, is a plant well known to herbalists.
An aromatic herb from the mint family (Lamiaceae), sage is cultivated for the taste of its leaves... but also for other properties.
The smoke that emerges from its burning leaves has disconcerting anti-stress properties, its essential oil is one of the most powerful and fortifying herbal teas are made from this plant.
This is all interesting to say the least!
A plant used for a very (but very) long time, white sage was already known to the Greek and Roman pharmacopoeias.
It was also used there during sacred rituals during which its leaves were burned.
In fact, sage has tonic and stimulating properties that can benefit our body. It is therefore not surprising that decoctions infused from its leaves have been used for centuries to strengthen the sick.
In medieval Europe, it was said in the countryside that white sage strengthened memory and helped develop wisdom.
It is undoubtedly these customs which pushed witchcraft to use white sage. From medieval healers to modern Wicca practitioners, they all use sage smoke during their rituals.
On the other side of the world this plant was also recognized: the Native Americans considered it highly sacred.
For so many people to have given pride of place to white sage... it well deserves its title of lucky plant, don't you think?
