What does this Japanese oni signet ring represent?
Oni are creatures from Japanese folklore. Traditionally, they are depicted as ogres with pointed horns, sharp teeth and carnivorous smiles. Additionally, they usually have shaggy hair and carry a mace of wood or iron as a weapon.
There was a time when the word oni could refer to any evil spirit. Today, it is limited to the monster that we have just described to you. Over the years and as Japanese folklore developed, the image of the hideous troll indeed became dominant.
The root of this term actually comes from another word meaning “to hide.” This probably refers to the deceptive nature of this type of Japanese mind. They are known to sometimes use trickery and malice to lure their victims who they then cruelly devour.
The evil character and hideous appearance of the oni, however, may have been useful to men. Samurai warriors for example wore frightening masks based on these demons as a form of intimidation, a warning to the enemy.
More broadly, the figure of the oni was used as a Japanese good luck charm to ward off minor demonic entities. The monsters we are talking about are therefore very feared and respected among men... but also among spirits!
