What is this symbol? And what’s so Ukrainian about it?
The Tryzub (тризуб in the local language) is a trident-shaped lucky charm serving as a rallying sign for the Ukrainian people.
Although it is one of the first Christian symbols to emerge in Slavic lands, it seems that the Tryzub was originally used by pagans.
The trident is in fact the symbol of many pre-Christian gods. Among these, the most famous is undoubtedly Poseidon.
And indeed, it turns out that the Greeks established colonies around the Black Sea. From there to finding a link between Poseidon's trident and Tryzub, there is only one step...
In short, this lucky symbol was already used centuries ago. The first notable ruler of the kingdom of the Rus of Ukraine, Saint Volodymyr the Great, for his part elevated it to the rank of royal emblem.
In short, it was after his conversion and baptism that he decided to add a cross to the middle bar of the Tryzub to mark the entry of Ukraine into the domain of Christ.
Throughout the Middle Ages, clergy and nobles used this symbol on their coats of arms, coats of arms, etc. When a historian sees a Tryzub decorated with a cross, he immediately associates it with this period in Ukraine.
Later, under the communist regime, the cross (like all other religious symbols) disappeared, so that the Tryzub used today does not have one either...
No matter, this does not prevent the Ukrainian people from proudly displaying it as a symbol of love for their country but also as a religious symbol (by associating it with the Holy Trinity).
