The Daruma doll? What could be the origin of this strange Japanese lucky charm?

In fact, it is supposed to represent a character named Bodhidharma. We are talking about the founder of Zen Buddhism who, after his death, was elevated to the rank of Japanese lucky deity.

According to legend, he spent 9 years meditating while remaining in the same position staring at the wall of a cave... keeping his eyes open the entire time!

After so much time without moving, his limbs atrophied and he lost his sight... but he achieved enlightenment!

This is why the Daruma doll from Japan does not have its eyes painted: this represents the abandonment of "physical" sight in order to obtain "spiritual" sight.

Today, this little figurine has become a real institution in Japan.

For the New Year, the children of each family receive one. They must then paint one of the two eyes and make a wish...

If during the year the wish comes true, it will then be necessary to paint the second eye. This means that the Daruma doll in question really works, and that its power is certain.

If, on the other hand, the wish does not come true, the doll will have to be burned during a ceremony in a temple.

Yes, not every Daruma doll from Japan will necessarily work...

This is also one of its greatest interests: not knowing if its magic will work, we have no other choice but to work ourselves to realize our dreams.

However, we sincerely hope that you come across a good one!
