What is an omamori? And how exactly does it work?

If you ever visit Japan, you will no doubt see strange little rectangular fabric bags like this. Although they are quite pretty in themselves, these pouches are not, not at all, intended to be decorative.

These are in fact protective amulets, real Japanese lucky charms known as omamori.

Generally sold in Buddhist or Shinto temples and shrines, omamori are handmade and blessed by monks. This is quite simply where their powers come from.

Once you have selected the one of your choice, you will need to keep in mind that it has an “expiration date”. As a general rule, this Japanese lucky charm only remains functional for one year after its "activation".

Concretely, this activation amounts to placing a small piece of paper inside the bag. Once you hold your pouch in your hand, you should write a prayer, a thought or a request that is dear to you on this paper and then lock it inside.

Thus, your wish and the blessings of the monks will be linked.

Depending on this prayer, the effects of your omamori can be radically different. Also know that the wish you make must be in line with the type of omamori you have chosen.

Faced with the impressive number of different possible uses, we were only able to select a few models (the most popular) to offer them to you today.

For many people, it doesn't matter if the power of their omamori fades over time. Thanks to its folkloric and cultural side, this little object will easily find its place in the collection of a lover of Japan.

For our part, we think it would be stupid to miss out on the boosts and sometimes great benefits that can really affect our lives.
