But actually, why a raven banner?

The Raven Banner, also known as hrafnsmerki (Old Norse, raven was "hræfn"), was a flag flown by Viking kings and jarls when they invaded England.

Odin, the king of the gods in the Norse pantheon, had two ravens as pets, Hugin and Munin.

It is therefore quite natural that the raven took a place of first importance as a Viking symbol... The hrafnsmerki too for that matter!

Quickly associated with the ferocity of the Northern fighters, the raven banner became an absolutely terrifying symbol for their enemies. Some of them saw it as a tool to summon the terrible forces of Odin.

Old English texts also explain to us how the raven banner, or hrafnsmerki, was used in certain divination rituals.

There is also a Viking legend according to which, by serving as messengers, his ravens offered Odin the power to know everything that happens in the world of men.

No wonder then that the raven banner was used by certain seers to deliver their prophecies.

If you are interested in the history of the Viking people, you are right.

These fierce fighters left their mark on Europe forever with their courage and self-sacrifice.

And the hrafnsmerki reminds us of that.
