The Abhaya Mudra? What is that ?

The so-called Abhaya Mudra position consists of a raised right hand, palm outwards and fingers upwards, while the left arm remains alongside the body.

This is a fairly widespread position in Indian Buddhism and, as such, many representations of the Buddha show it to us this way.

The meaning that we can see through this gesture will be interpreted differently depending on the branch of Buddhism we are talking about.

For the Theravada school, for example, the position of the Abhaya Mudra is a gesture of courage and fearlessness associated with the state that the Buddha experienced immediately after achieving enlightenment.

Mahayana Buddhism, for its part, will rather see it as a sign of inner peace and a peaceful spirituality.

The Shingon, an esoteric Buddhist movement founded in Japan, makes it its preferred meditation position.

It is clear: the Buddha of this lucky statuette offers us a complex and profound message.

To interpret it correctly, we will therefore have to enlighten ourselves with the traditions and teachings of some of the most accomplished philosophical doctrines of all time.
