How did the Saint George ribbon become a Russian lucky charm?
Every year to celebrate Victory Day (May 9 in Russia), millions of Saint George ribbons are distributed everywhere.
Even Russian leaders and high-ranking military officers wear them. Really everyone gives importance to the ribbon of Saint George.
According to some, the patriotic impulse associated with this Russian lucky charm is a consequence of the nihilism and despondency arising from the Soviet period.
It’s clear : Russians have always been able to rise stronger in the face of hardship.
In fact, the Saint George ribbon dates Imperial Russia to the 18th century.
It was at this time that Empress Catherine the Great created the "Order of Saint George", a military distinction which became the most prestigious of its time.
You guessed it : this decoration consisted of a black and orange ribbon (representing gunpowder and gunfire, respectively).
The Saint George ribbon is therefore an honorary distinction present in the hearts of Russians for centuries.
